PROJECT BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AT SIRUDAVOOR VILLAGE
India has launched its Updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2024-2030, with the goal of protecting at least 30 per cent of its terrestrial, inland water, and coastal and marine areas by 2030, in line with global biodiversity targets.
The Project aimed to assist, partnering with the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board, in realising the aforesaid in Sirudavoor Village.
Sirudavoor Village, in Thirupour Block, Chengalpattu District, is endowed with rich biodiversity since it possesses 3 ecosystems: Wetland, Agricultural Fields, Scrub and Forest.
It is critical to have a comprehensive database of locally available bio-resources including the landscape and demography, in order that they be conserved for the community’s use at all times. Towards this, it was necessary to develop for the Village a People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR), which is a repository of flora and fauna species, local livelihoods and traditional knowledge of utilising medicinal herbs and plants as well as a comprehensive database of locally available bio-resources including the landscape and demography.
With the mandate from the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board and with the active participation of the Panchayat, Community and 13 Youth Volunteers – 9 females and 4 males – from the Village, a People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) as detailed in the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, was created at the end of a 6-month - October 2025 to March 2026 - pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon survey of the entire Village.
